Linux / WSL vi do save as or create password encryption

Vi / Vim is a powerful tool and for Linux enthusiast, this is a must tool to learn.

Text file or basic editing in command line is quite important, to take notes, create a script, store text data or just anything that needs editing or creating via command line or terminal.

How to create a text file in command line and put a password or encrypt the file?

Text file is readable via lot of tools, cat, less, more, grep or any text editing files.

One way to protect the file or its content is to encrypt the file.

Screenshot below shows, how to create the file and encrypt it.

Example: vi -x TestPasswordEncrypt.txt


After entering the command, it will ask for an encryption key twice.

And after entering the password, it will open the vi text editor, pressing "i" or the "insert" key then user can start entering text or typing on the vi window.

After typing anything, press "esc" key and press :w (colon and w)  to save the file.

If user need to save the file with a new file name, or do a "save as"  then type:

:w new_filename.sh




Another way to save the file, is to use :x  (colon x). This will save the file if there is something to save and exit vi after saving.

To test or check the file, whether the contents will be readable or not do a "cat" or use any tool to read the file.


Once the file is encrypted, opening the file will ask for the password. The password that was used during the encryption process.

Screenshots below, shows when opening the encrypted file a password is needed.


Once the correct password is entered, the file will open and it will also show the contents of the file. And also it will show that the file is encrypted with "blowfish" encryption algorithm



Another way to create a password or encrypt the file is to do it via the "vi" window.

On "vi", press "Esc" key and type :X (it's colon and capital "X"). After typing the commands, the system will ask for a password/encryption key. It will ask for  a password twice.




After entering the key, it will go back to the same screen where you can see your file. Type :x or :wq to save and exit the file.

To confirm, whether file is encrypted or not. Do a "cat" to trad the file or open the file using vi or vim.

Example below shows "cat" command and the file is not readable.

Notepad++ convert multiple lines to a single line and vice versa

Notepad++ is an awesome text editing tool, it can accept regex to process the text data. If the data is in a “.csv” format or comma separated values which is basically just a text file that can either be opened using a text editor, excel or even word. 016-799 Fuji Xerox or Fuji Film print error code. That shows a description error as “Print instruction Fail detected in decomposer.” The error code and error description are alien languages for users and even system administrators who are not familiar with Fuji Xerox error code.
