Cannot FTP in Windows explorer




Windows 7 unable to use FTP in Windows explorer.

In Windows 7, Microsoft allows to use explorer to browse FTP sites just like browsing my documents or any regular folders or files in the computer.

Browsing FTP using windows explorer will not need to use any browser or FTP client, provided of course you have the right credentials to access the FTP site.

Open "Computer", press "Alt key" click on "File" and select "Add Network Location", follow on screen instruction, by clicking next button and enter the FTP site.

If some issues will occur a message will be displayed like, "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another."

Searching the issue on the Internet for users who had encountered and resolve this dilemma has various resolutions or approaches on how to tackle this issue.

What works for me when I face this problem was to export registry settings from a working PC to the other PC which is unable to browse FTP using windows explorer.

The registry settings to export and merge to the PC having the issue are these registry keys below:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ftp

Right click on the "ftp" key and select "export" and save the registry key.

Copy the registry key to the problematic PC, double click the registry key and a message will be shown to merge or replace the ftp registry settings.



Click "yes" to confirm, if administrator credentials is needed. Then enter the necessary user name and password, or ask help from someone who knows the admin credentials.


After merging or replacing the registry key, try again browsing the FTP using windows explorer and hopefully it will work as expected and resolve the issue.

  Deleting files in command prompt using wildcards is quite straight forward. Command below will delete all text (".txt") files on the specified path.      Del D:\txtlog\*.txt Command above will delete all files with ".txt" extension in d:\txtlog directory.
