In Linux vim or vi is a must tool to learn on the command line.
Editing .conf or configuration file, checking .log files or editing scripts and other tasks that requires editing will need to a vi or vim to read and edit.
However, nano text editor is another version that is quite straight forward to use as well for text editing.
It is still good to have a vi/vim on a skill set of sysadmins, since vim or vi was already in Linux or Unix system before nano was introduced.
Editing, checking or viewing a large file requires navigation. Of course, arrow keys are their tom move forward, upward or whatever direction is needed.
Viewing 1000 or more lines and using arrow keys to move from 1st line to the last line will take sometimes if only arrow up and arrow down will be used.
In vi / vim to quickly navigate from 1st line to last line no matter how big the file is can easily be done using some commands.
Open a text file with number of lines using vim. Using :1, or :$ is the command to switch back and forth from 1st line up to the last line in vim.
And it's easy to remember, :1 means go to the number 1 line or first line; and :$ the dollar $ sign in bash scripting means end of the whole line, but yes in vim it means go to the end of the file.
That's it all you need to remember to switch between 1st line and last line is 1 and $.
The other way to do it of course is the conventional way in command mode press capital G to go the end of the file and gg for the first line. Hey, 1 and $ is easier to remember the G and gg.
Here's some screen shot on how it's done, make sure vim is not in editing mode or it's in normal or command mode. Press "ESC" key twice or until the "insert" option is not seen on the vim menu bar.
Press the colon key ":" to tell vim that some command will be used. Use the arrow key to position the cursor other than the first line.
Press :1 to go to the first line
Once the cursor moves to the first line, press ":$" or issue the "$" key command and the cursor will go directly to the last line of the file.
That's it :1 and :$ are the two things to remember to switch between first and the last line. Try also :101 check whether the cursor will be present at line 101, make sure of course the text file has enough lines for the cursor to move around.
Till next time....
